The spa Františkovy Lázně is one of the most famous resorts in Central Europe, not only for its unique thermal springs but also for the rich occurrence of peat, which is used in balneological procedures. Nowadays, the link between thermal spa and medicine is questioned. The answer could be found in scientific research of the effects of balneotherapy. Františkovy Lázně offers a good opportunity for an international balneological research institute due to its rich natural resources, good transport connection, and location near the state border. The city could profit from a more qualified industry, the opportunity to apply new acknowledges in the local balneotherapy, and the chance to get more prestige.

The proposal is in the area with a mystical character, where peat was mined, and transported by an old narrow-gauge railway to the spa complex. The site is well-connected with the spa city centre and the main traffic routes.

A new pedestrian connection allows the public to pass through the area which is not currently open. A walking path has an educational character related to peat and it is an element that also connects the whole research complex. It is designed on the footprint of a large existing concrete surface. The Institute is divided into three parts. The highest object with a viewpoint on the roof is an office building. Laboratories are placed in the smallest object in the middle. The third object offers space for the public like a lecture hall, an exhibition space, a restaurant, and a library.
